Ask the people you want to play with to join the same room as you. One of you should take the top spot at a table, click the Admin button toward the bottom of the screen, click the Make Private checkbox, and click submit. Then click on the Admin button again and use the Invite Players dropdown to select the people you want to play with. Click submit.
When signed in, hover on your name in the top right part of the screen and click on "Username Change" in the menu. Note that there are instructions on the username change screen. Usernames deemed inappropriate - for any reason - will be removed.

There are a few things that can cause this to happen. If you were at a table and tried to leave by closing the tab that was on the table, it will take a few minutes to cycle you off the table. The reason it takes some time is because the site tries to reconnect people who are temporarily disconnected.
When this happens, it is because a tab on some device you are signed in on is open to a different room.
